Museum

The Royal Perth Hospital Museum takes visitors on a walk through the colourful history of the hospital from its opening in 1855, right through to the present day.

Established as a research resource centre for the hospital and the public, the artefacts displayed in the Museum portray the history of healthcare and social development of Perth.

International Year of the Nurse and Midwife Museum display, Victoria Street entrance, RPH.The medical equipment of the past provides a fascinating insight into the changes constantly taking place in the field of medicine, and each object within the Museum has a unique story to tell.

From a machine which supposedly cured acne by sending electric currents through the brain, to a lithotrite (an uncomfortable-looking probe with a chain attached) which removed stones from the bladder – each instrument gives you an insight into the hospital throughout the ages.

One of the most valued artefacts in the Museum is a box containing the first x-ray equipment in Australia. Imported from France by Dr W. J. Hancock, the Cold Cathode X-ray tubes assisted in examining patients in the hospital in the early 1900.

A must-see experience, the Museum is open to the general public Wednesday and Thursday from 9am to 2pm.
