Royal Perth Hospital Flight Path – Scheme Amendment
A Special Control Area now exists which secures an emergency flight path for helicopters travelling to Royal Perth Hospital.
This limits the development potential for a number of landholdings by imposing heights limits on nearby holdings so the helicopters can still land safely.
Helicopter transport provides the quickest means of transferring critically injured patients to a major trauma service.
Off-site landings have been found to result in longer transport times to the emergency room. Helipads directly linked to the medical facility in trauma centres can reduce transport time, in addition to reducing the costs and future consequences of trauma.
Why an emergency flight path?
Dedicated flight paths are required to minimise risk to the community, property and those accessing the State Major Trauma Unit at RPH.
Protection of the emergency flight paths is important as ongoing development proposals of a significant scale in proximity to RPH will limit the flight path directions and options.
The flight paths will provide safe access for the Emergency Rescue Helicopter Service and those onboard, including pilots and patients in an emergency.
