    WA state trauma registry

Since its inception in 1994, the WA State Trauma Registry has been collecting data on:

    • Major trauma cases (Injury Severity Score [ISS] > 12)
    • Road trauma cases (major & minor trauma)
    • Trauma-related deaths in hospital (major & minor trauma)

The Registry provides a comprehensive picture of trauma in WA. Its data is used to:

    • Support quality improvement audits and research projects
    • Inform education and training across WA
    • Guide the strategic planning of trauma services
    • Monitor trauma-related clinical indicators
    • Contribute quarterly to the Australia and New Zealand Bi-National Trauma Registry and Data Linkage Services

    Inclusion Criteria

The criteria for inclusion into the State Trauma Services database are:

    • All major trauma and minor road trauma patients who present to the definitive hospital for treatment within seven days of their date of trauma and who were hospitalised for greater
than 24 hours in a designated hospital.
    • All trauma-related deaths at the definitive hospital regardless of hospital length of stay.

    Exclusion Criteria

The following cases are excluded from the WA State Trauma Registry:

    • Poisoning or drug ingestion that do not cause injury
    • Patients who die on the way to the definitive hospital
    • Hanging and drowning cases

    Alignment with Standards

To ensure consistency with national and international standards, the WA State Trauma Registry aligned its data collection practices with the Australia and New Zealand Bi-National Trauma Minimum Dataset (BNTMDS) in 2023.

    Accessing Registry Data

Researchers, clinicians, and organisations may apply to access Registry data. All requests must comply with relevant ethics and governance requirements and are reviewed by the Trauma Audit and Research Committee.
