Trauma Service

The State Adult Major Trauma Unit at Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) is a leading centre for trauma care in Western Australia, providing specialised treatment for critically injured patients. As the state’s only designated adult major trauma unit, it is equipped to handle complex traumatic injuries, with a commitment to excellence in patient care.

Our highly skilled multidisciplinary team includes trauma surgeons, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, clinical psychology, speech therapists and allied health professionals who work collaboratively to ensure patients receive comprehensive evidence-based treatment.

The Trauma Service has been verified by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (external link) Trauma Verification Program as a Level 1 service.

It is also accredited by the Post Fellowship Education and Training program in Trauma for two dedicated Fellowships in Trauma Surgery.

Staff are engaged in active clinical research and contribute to the State Trauma Registry and the Australia New Zealand Trauma Registry.

Patient journey

At WA’s State Trauma Unit, we are committed to delivering coordinated, compassionate, and expert care to trauma patients from the moment of arrival through to recovery. Upon arrival, patients are rapidly assessed and stabilised by a skilled multidisciplinary team including emergency physicians, trauma surgeons, nurses, allied health professionals, and support staff. Throughout their hospital stay, patients receive personalised treatment care plans tailored to their injuries and needs, with ongoing communication and involvement of families and carers. Rehabilitation planning begins early, with a focus on physical, emotional, and social recovery. Our team ensures a smooth transition from acute care to rehabilitation services or community support, empowering patients and their families throughout every step of the trauma journey.
