Medical Oncology

Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) Medical Oncology provides inpatient, outpatient and consultancy services for patients at RPH. Clinical staff have a high level of expertise that provides for tertiary level advice and management of patients with breast, prostate, colorectal or lung cancer.

Dr Ru-Wen Teh, RPBG Medical Oncology Head of Department

Dr Ru-Wen Teh is a medical oncologist at Royal Perth Hospital. Dr Teh has been with the Medical Oncology team since the service was re-established in 2016 and has been the Clinical Lead/Head of Department since 2018. She has overseen Medical Oncology at RPH expand from an outpatient-based service delivered by 2 Oncologists to now a unit of 5 Oncologist managing 4 cancer types in the inpatient and outpatient setting with the support of a full Allied Health team. She has led innovation in developing WA’s first GP-led survivorship program for colorectal and breast cancer.

Dr Teh graduated from University of Western Australia in 2004 and completed her training at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Royal Perth Hospital in 2012. She also has interstate experience working at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. Having worked at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Fiona Stanley Hospital and St John of God Subiaco as a Medical Oncologist, she has extensive clinical experience and is well connected in the field of Oncology. Dr Teh has special interest in breast and colorectal oncology. She has a keen interest in service development, service improvement and oversees numerous QI projects.

 

Dr Chandra Diwakarla, BSc (Hons), MBBS, FRACP

Dr Chandra Diwakarla is a Medical Oncologist at Royal Perth and Fiona Stanley Hospitals.

She completed her Medical Oncology Training across WA and the ACT including a Fellowship in gynaecological and upper gastrointestinal malignancies. She has also been involved in laboratory based research through the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the Australian National University in the ACT where she studied novel therapeutic agents against triple negative breast cancer.

After returning to Perth in 2018, Dr Diwakarla has focused her attention on breast and head & neck cancers and has a regular presence at both the Royal Perth and Fiona Stanley Hospital multi-disciplinary meetings. She has previously also managed lung cancers and general malignancies during her work in rural settings including Kalgoorlie and Geraldton.

Dr Diwakarla is a strong advocate for trainees and junior consultants in Oncology across WA and has previously been the chair of the Young Oncology Group of Australia (YOGA), a branch of the national Medical Oncology Group of Australia (MOGA). She is the education lead for advanced training in medical oncology at Fiona Stanley Hospitals and is spear-heading new programs at Royal Perth Hospital as the service expands.

Dr Timothy Humphries

Dr Tim Humphries is a Medical Oncologist with a special interest in personalized medicine, medical education and early phase clinical trials. He trained in Perth and following the attainment of his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Physicians undertook research fellowships in immunotherapy biomarkers and early phase clinical trials through The WA Cancer and Palliative Care Network and Linear Clinical Research. In addition to his work at Royal Perth Hospital, Dr Humphries consults at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, conducts translational research through the University of Western Australia, and leads a number of early phase clinical trials at Linear Clinical Research. Dr Humphries is a firm believer in shared decision making and compassionate, patient-centred care.

 

 

 

Dr Linda (Yang) Ye

Dr Linda Ye is a consultant Medical Oncologist at Royal Perth Hospital.

She graduated from UWA and completed medical oncology training in Perth in 2018. Subsequently she went on to complete a lung cancer research fellowship at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and a phase I clinical trials fellowship at Linear Clinical Research.

Dr Ye has a particular interest in thoracic, gastrointestinal and genitourinary cancers and strives to deliver evidence-based patient-centred care.

She also has a keen interest in translational and clinical research. Currently Dr Ye is completing a PhD through the National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases at UWA, focusing on personalised immunotherapy strategies for patients with lung cancer.

 

 

Dr Aesha Gandhi MBBS (hons), FRACP, BSc (dist)

Dr Aesha Gandhi is a consultant Medical Oncologist with a focus on Lung, Gastrointestinal and Prostate Cancer at RPH. She completed advanced medical oncology training in Western Australia, gaining experience across all three tertiary sites in the state. In 2021, she was honoured with the Western Australia Cancer and Palliative Care Network Fellowship Award, where she conducted a research fellowship in immuno-oncology, leading to the establishment of the state-based melanoma research database (REDCap). Dr Gandhi’s impactful research has been presented at national and international conferences and is reflected in her multiple publications.

Currently pursuing a PhD, Dr Gandhi’s research focuses on translational investigations involving blood-based biomarkers for predicting immune-related adverse events in lung cancer and melanoma patients. Recognised with an Australian Government research and training scholarship, she serves as an associate investigator securing an NHMRC Grant. She has strong research collaborations with esteemed institutions including Edith Cowan University, Macquarie University, Melanoma Institute Australia and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, Sydney. Beyond her research commitments, Dr Gandhi actively contributes to medical education, having served as a UWA medical student examiner and holding the position of Adjunct Senior Lecturer at UWA.

 

Jennifer Doyle, Nurse Practitioner

Jen completed her Bachelor of Nursing (ECU) in 2000 and her Masters of Nursing (Curtin University) in 2012. She has worked at Royal Perth Hospital since 2003. She was actively involved in the transition from RPH to Fiona Stanley Hospital where she worked for 3 years.  She played a crucial role in re-establishing the Oncology service at Royal Perth Hospital.

With over 20 years experience in Medical Oncology, our Nurse Practitioner, Jen, conducts daily clinics for patients in the treatment and survivorship setting. She is well-versed in managing the side effects of chemotherapy, treating symptoms due to cancer and is an expert in managing reactions to chemotherapy. She is highly skilled in peripheral IV cannulation and organises central intravenous access for patients who require it.  Jen supports the Medical Oncology team in every possible way and is the glue that keeps them together!
