Endocrinology and Diabetes

Our Endocrinology and Diabetes department provides treatment and education for individuals, and their carers, with diabetes and other endocrine disorders. Patients may be referred to us from within our hospital or from the community.

Our clinics are staffed by Consultant Physicians in endocrinology and diabetes, dietitians and diabetes nurse educators. We can provide referrals to social work and Clinical Psychology if needed.

Diabetes

Our outpatient service provides multidisciplinary assistance for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes when they require insulin or have complications from their condition. Our aim is to help patients control their blood glucose levels and the associated cardiovascular disease risk factors. By doing this we hope to prevent diabetes complications developing and also limit disruption to the patient’s lifestyle.

There is also a dedicated multidisciplinary diabetic foot ulcer service provided jointly with vascular surgery, podiatry, infectious diseases, wound care, pedorthics, with visiting input from orthopaedic surgery and plastic surgery as needed.

Endocrinology

We provide inpatient and outpatient services for a diverse range of conditions including:

  • diseases of the thyroid, pituitary and adrenal glands
  • disorders of calcium metabolism
  • some aspects of reproductive endocrinology
  • other metabolic disorders.

Osteoporosis

The osteoporosis outpatient service is provided by a multidisciplinary team that includes:

  • endocrinologists
  • geriatricians
  • dietitians.
