Seven East Metropolitan Health Service teams were recognised as finalists in the 2018 WA Health Excellence Awards.

One of these finalists is the Royal Perth Hospital Addiction, Psychiatry, Intervention, Discharge (RAPID) team, who have been recognised as finalists in the Mental Health Commissioner’s Award.

RAPID was designed to overcome the inequities for patients seeking specialised alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment. It is the first team of its kind in Western Australia to combine mental health and AOD specialist clinicians in one team.

The team offers a single point of contact 24/7 to Royal Perth Hospital wards and units seeking referral to and specialist advice on all things mental health and AOD. RAPID team works side by side with Homeless Health Care, RUAH Choices and Royal Perth Hospital’s Aboriginal Health Liaison officers to meet the needs of an often marginalised and vulnerable cohort of patients.

RAPID Team has bridged the service gap at Royal Perth Hospital with 830 AOD referrals seen in the first six months of operation – only 803 were able to be seen in the whole of 2017.

Congratulations to the RAPID team on this deserved recognition.
