Dr Lucy Kilshaw named the 2018 National Clinical Educator of the Year

Congratulations to Dr Lucy Kilshaw, Consultant Geriatrician and Director of Post Graduate Medical Education at Royal Perth Hospital, who was named the 2018 National Clinical Educator of the Year at the National Conference for the Confederation for Postgraduate Medical Education in November.

The recipient of the 2018 Western Australian Clinical Educator of the Year award in October, Lucy was then selected as the national winner from a highly competitive pool of seven other recipients across Australia and New Zealand.

Lucy was nominated by her peers for her exemplary leadership and advocacy in regard to junior doctors’ welfare, and her unwavering commitment to medical education at RPH.

Known for her friendly, nurturing and approachable nature, Lucy has had a significant role in contributing to mentoring and development of Junior Medical Officers at RPH as well as continuing to explore new and innovative ways to improve clinical outcomes through technology.

Lucy completed her medical degree at the University of Birmingham Medical School in 1996 and has worked as a Consultant in Geriatric Medicine since 2007 at RPH.

With a special interest in continence, ortho-geriatrics and the management of older people in the emergency department, Lucy is renowned for striving to deliver compassionate care for older Australians in both acute and subacute care.

In her role as Director Post Graduate Medical Education which she began in 2016, Lucy and her postgraduate team have developed some amazing new programs in collaboration with our wonderful junior doctors. The most recent success is the Royal Perth Hospital Doctors Wellbeing Program, which saw the introduction of a full-time wellbeing officer dedicated to Junior Medical staff.

In 2017 Lucy was the recipient of the Royal Perth Bentley Group Outstanding Service Award – Medical Professional – for her commitment to the teaching and wellbeing of junior medical staff at RPH.

The Confederation of Postgraduate Medical Education Councils Australia and New Zealand Clinical Educator of the Year award has been presented annually since 2010.

The award recognises clinical educators across Australia and New Zealand who have made a significant contribution to the education and training / mentoring of junior doctors.
